The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

This first step in applying for federal, state and most institutional aid is to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, referred to as the FAFSA, at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA contains questions that ask about you, your financial information, your school plans, and more which calculates your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) according to a formula established by law.

The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is a measure of your family’s financial strength and resources available to assist with the cost of your education. Your family’s income (taxable and untaxed), assets, family size, and the number of family members attending college are the main factors considered in the federal formula. Your EFC will appear on the Student Aid Report (SAR) you receive after you file your FAFSA.

To complete the FAFSA:

1. Gather the documents you need:

Social Security Number
Driver’s license (if any)
Federal Income Tax return and W2s (for applicable year)
Untaxed Income Records (child support, worker’s compensation, etc.)
Current financial statements (bank statements, investment statements, etc.)
Alien registration or permanent resident card (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
Important Note: We strongly recommend that you choose the option to import your tax information from the IRS when completing your FAFSA. Beginning in Summer 2012, GSC will no longer accept copies of your tax returns if you are chosen for verification, and importing your data will be the fastest and most accurate option.

2. Print a FAFSA on the Web Worksheet to organize all your data to transfer to the FAFSA.

3. Make sure to put Granite State College’s Federal School Code 031013 on your FAFSA. Without this school code on your FAFSA, Granite State College will not receive your FAFSA from the Department of Education.

4. Sign your FAFSA electronically with a Personal Identification Number (PIN) which you may apply for at www.pin.ed.gov. Your FAFSA can not be processed without a signature. A parent is also required to sign with a PIN for dependent students in order to process.

Reapplication Process
Students are required to reapply for student financial aid on an annual basis. The student aid period is July 1st to June 30th of each year which coincides with Granite State College’s Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring terms. Please follow the Granite State College financial aid process to continue.

Verification
A financial aid application may be chosen for verification by the U.S. Department of Education or by Granite State College. The purpose of verification is to maintain the integrity of federal, state and institutional financial aid programs by verifying the information provided by students and parents on their FAFSA. If you are selected for verification, you are required to submit additional documentation.

Please note: We recommend that you choose the option to import your tax information from the IRS when you complete your FAFSA. Choosing this option will make the verification process easier.

Conflicting Information
Your FAFSA application may also contain conflicting information that requires resolution. You are required to submit the appropriate documentation and/or additional information requested in order to resolve your FAFSA.

Special Circumstances
Granite State College does recognize that a student and/or family’s true circumstances may not be accurately portrayed in their FAFSA. Approved special circumstances allow the Office of Financial Aid to adjust a FAFSA accordingly which may increase financial aid eligibility.
