The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)This first step in applying for federal, state and most institutional aid is to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, referred to as the FAFSA, at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA contains questions that ask about you, your financial information, your school plans, and more which calculates your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) according to a formula established by law.The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is a measure of your family’s financial strength and resources available to assist with the cost of your education. Your family’s income (taxable and untaxed), assets, family size, and the number of family members attending college are the main factors considered in the federal formula. Your EFC will appear on the Student Aid Report (SAR) you receive after you file your FAFSA. |
