Criminal Justice (B.S.)

Prepare for entry or advancement in law enforcement, corrections, probation and parole, administration, domestic violence prevention, and other community-based programs that exist for victims, offenders, and their families. Graduates of the GSC Criminal Justice program are prepared for careers in law, business security, policing and law enforcement, federal service agencies, corrections, dispute resolution, and victim advocacy. Specific careers may include: Safety Officer, Asset Protection Associate, Police Officer, Family Intervention Specialist, Corrections Officer, Loss Prevention Team Leader, Detention Officer, and Security Guard.

Students will:

  • possess a broad and interdisciplinary understanding of the psychosocial, cultural, ethical, and political dimensions of criminal justice in contemporary society.
  • demonstrate an ability to understand and apply ethical thinking and behavior as it relates to their work environment.
  • demonstrate an understanding of research methodology and the interpretation of information as it applies to criminal justice.
  • demonstrate a working knowledge of criminology, criminal justice, law enforcement, corrections, probation/parole, US and NH constitutional law, and advocacy.

Students in the Bachelor of Science Criminal Justice programs are encouraged to select the following courses to meet a portion of their general education requirements:

  • HUMN 505 Introduction to Ethics
  • PSY 501 Introduction to Psychology OR
  • SOC 501 Introduction to Sociology
 

Credit for Prior Learning and Training
Granite State College gives Criminal Justice degree candidates the opportunity to earn credit for other learning experiences through transfer credit, academic testing, and evaluation of training programs such as those offered in the military or by the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Academy. Granite State College has evaluated the entire Academy curriculum, and offers pre-approved credit for in-service courses.

Background checks are completed for most positions in the field of criminal justice, and are normally also required for any internship. Applicants or current students who have had arrests or convictions may not be eligible for employment. Opportunities for a career in Criminal Justice and closely related fields will require that individuals demonstrate the required psychological, personal, and legal qualifications. 

Flexible delivery formats such as evening, online, hybrid, and weekend intensive courses ensure that the program is accessible to working adults of all ages. In addition, this degree allows a seamless transition from the associate to the baccalaureate degree.
