Manchester, NH – OLLI at Granite State College (GSC) will feature Mel Allen, Editor of Yankee Magazine, on Friday, May 20 at GSC’s Manchester location, for a talk entitled “Voices of New England.”
Yankee Magazine has given voice to New England for decades and, in his talk, Editor Mel Allen explores the nature of New Englanders, from the famous to the unknown, through their stories.
As the fifth editor of Yankee since it was launched in 1935, Allen’s career spans three decades, during which he has edited and written for every section of the magazine, including home, food and travel. In his pursuit of stories, he has raced a sled dog team, crawled into the dens of black bears, fished with the legendary Ted Williams, picked potatoes in Aroostook County and stood beneath a battleship before it was launched.
The national OLLI network began in 2000, with grants from the Bernard Osher Foundation, to emphasize the importance of lifelong learning for everyone, at any age. The membership-driven OLLI program welcomes anyone over the age of 50 to become a member and attend its classes, where there aren’t any prerequisites or grades, but a genuine, widely held passion for learning. There are now 117 OLLIs in colleges and universities across the country, all of which celebrate a commitment to lifelong learning and “learning for the fun of it!”
The first and only OLLI in New Hampshire began in 2004 at Granite State College, one of four institutions of the University System of New Hampshire. Now 750+ members strong, OLLI holds classes in five locations across the state, including Manchester, Claremont, Concord, Conway and the Seacoast.
Allen’s first story for the magazine was published in 1977. His earlier assignments were to find New England stories; however in his search, he found more than just stories – he heard the voices of New England, voices one can never forget. He met interesting and passionate people and from asking them questions and listening to their answers, he discovered the unexpected. Mel delivers an entertaining and interesting commentary on New England life through the voices of its people.
Yankee Magazine was founded in 1935 and is based in Dublin, New Hampshire. It is the only magazine devoted to New England through its coverage of travel, home, food, and feature stories. With a paid circulation of over 350,000 and a total audience of nearly 2 million readers, it is published by Yankee Publishing Incorporated (YPI), a family-owned, independent magazine publisher.
The event will be held on Friday, May 20 at 10am at Granite State College’s Manchester campus. The campus is located at 195 McGregor Street in the MillWest complex. The cost to attend is $10 per member and $15 per non-member. Pre-registration is suggested.
