April 7, 2009 - CONCORD- The Granite State College Alumni Learner Association recently awarded Danette MacArthur of North Conway a $1,000 merit scholarship in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement, thoughtful career path and dedication to achieving lifelong goals.

MacArthur is currently working toward her Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Science at Granite State College.    In addition to maintaining a 3.95 grade point average, MacArthur is a member of the national honor society, Alpha Sigma Lambda and works full time as an office manager for North Conway Chiropractic Center in North Conway.

MacArthur also owns and operates “Delectables by Danette,” a small bakery business specializing in the creation of wedding and specialty cakes and desserts and is the founder of   “New Wings,” a faith-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing transitional housing for battered women and their children.

Prior to launching New Wings, MacArthur served on the board of directors of  “Starting Point,” another organization dedicated to serving victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Upon completion of her degree MacArthur looks forward to continuing her work with victims of domestic violence through New Wings.

“My years at Granite State College have been invaluable to me as I recognized that I am a capable woman blessed with many talents and whose life has a purpose,” MacArthur said.  “I have learned that my life is free to do with it as I please and I am amazed at the unlimited possibilities that have unfolded.”

MacArthur is one of ten deserving Granite State College students selected this year by the ALA Board to receive an ALA Merit Scholarship.

“The awarding of these scholarships is truly an honor and a privilege that the board thoroughly enjoys,” said John Paine, Chairman of the ALA Board of Directors.  “Having the opportunity to actually make a difference in the life of a Granite State College learner is remarkable.”

More than $110,000 in scholarships has been awarded by the ALA to deserving Granite State College students since 1990.  Its scholarship program is funded by donations made by graduates of Granite State College.

In addition to their fundraising efforts, the Granite State College ALA also works together with current Granite State College students, faculty and staff to promote the College in the community and throughout the state and to support the institution’s educational mission.
