April 4, 2009 - CONCORD- The Granite State College Alumni Learner Association recently awarded Regina Labounty of Claremont a $1,000 merit scholarship in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement, thoughtful career path and dedication to achieving lifelong goals.

Labounty is currently working toward her self-designed Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services at Granite State College.  In addition to maintaining a 3.80 grade point average, Labounty facilitates the Student Resource Center at Granite State College in Claremont.

“Receiving the Merit Scholarship has provided a monumental opportunity which will allow me to continue forward with my valuable academic journey and lifelong educational goals as an adult learner at Granite State College,” Labounty said.  “By achieving my degree, I will be able to continue to mentor and encourage individuals, and help enlighten, enable and empower students through their excitable pursuit of academic excellence and quest for veracity.”

Labounty is a volunteer for “Sew Much Comfort”, a non-profit organization which collects and alters comfortable, adaptable clothing to accommodate severely injured United States Veterans and service men and women.  She is also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and dedicates time in the Read Across America program, fundraisers for David’s House, Adopt-a-Child, and Coats-for-Kids.  Other community service activities include work with Children’s Museum-to-You, Curious Creatures, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and Family Learning Weekends at the American School for the Deaf. Labounty has also been an active participant as a foster family for Guide Dogs.

Prior to this year’s ALA Merit Scholarship Labounty has received the NHHEAF “CEO” Scholarship, the Bernard Osher Re-entry Scholarship, a New Hampshire Incentive Grant and a New Hampshire Charitable Fund Grant.  Past civic involvement with Student Senate and Service Learning and as an advocate for the Claremont Senior Center, has earned her two certificates of appreciation.
Labounty is one of ten deserving Granite State College students selected this year by the ALA Board to receive an ALA Merit Scholarship,

“The awarding of these scholarships is truly an honor and a privilege that the board thoroughly enjoys,” said John Paine, Chairman of the ALA Board of Directors.  “Having the opportunity to actually make a difference in the life of a Granite State College learner is remarkable.”

More than $110,000 in scholarships has been awarded by the ALA to deserving Granite State College students since 1990.  Its scholarship program is funded by donations made by graduates of Granite State College.

In addition to their fund raising efforts, the Granite State College ALA also works together with current Granite State College students, faculty and staff to promote the College in the community and throughout the state and to support the institution’s educational mission.
