Granite State College Alumni, Students Earn Recognition

Faith Greene, an alumnus of GSC’s School of Education teacher certification programs, has been named Middle School Special Educator of the year and will officially receive her award at the New Hampshire Excellence in Education Awards later this year.

Green has been teaching special education for 16 years and currently serves as an educator at the Merrimack Valley Middle School. Prior to forging this career path, Greene taught piano and other music lessons. When her own children attended elementary school, she was inspired by the teachers who worked with the special needs children and felt an immediate connection. Today, she is seen as an exemplary leader within her school by colleagues, administrators, students and their families.

Peter Nhiany, who has earned his associate, bachelor’s and is now pursuing his Master of Science in Leadership at Granite State College; received the Presidents’ Awards from Campus Compact for NH, which recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations in higher education.

Nhiany emigrated to the U.S. as a refugee through a Sudanese Lost Boys program with the goal of pursuing his education and providing greater support for his family and community in Africa. Outside of the classroom, Nhiany works as a counselor helping individuals with various disabilities and is the co-founder of Life for Sudan, a nonprofit organization that supports the South Sudanese communities both back home and in Greater Manchester. One role he has taken on is helping Sudanese refugees navigate the process of attaining U.S. citizenship, just as he has, so others can realize their own American dreams.

Scholarships from GSC’s Alumni Learner Association (ALA) were awarded to nine students who exemplify outstanding academic performance, embrace a thoughtful career path, and demonstrate a dedication to achieving lifelong goals. Recipients include:  Julie Belanger of Gorham, NH; Kellie Denoncourt of Concord, NH; Allison Foran of Brownfield, ME; Joseph Jackson of Belmont, NH; Francesca Kennedy of Barrington, NH; Caroline Martin of Allenstown, NH; Tina Nevins of Pittsfield, NH; Linda Penkul of Lebanon, ME; and Jennifer Seiler of Enfield, NH.

Granite State College celebrates the significant accomplishments of Greene, Nhiany, and the ALA Scholarship recipients and is tremendously proud of their success.
